The Ministry of Tourism (Secretaría de Turismo) in Mexico or abbreviated as SECTUR is the Secretary of State which, according to the Federal Organic Administration Law corresponds to the offices with activities related to the development and growth of the tourism industry in Mexico.

On September 8, 2009, Mexican President Felipe Calderon Hinojosa announced its demise as an austerity measure due to the crisis in Mexico from 2008 to 2009. The activities of the former SECTUR would then be handed over to the Ministry of Economy.

This demise was rejected by the Mexican Senate.

Main activities:

  • To develop and lead the growth of tourism in Mexico.
  • To promote, in coordination with the states, national tourism, area development in coordination with the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources.
  • Create a tourist service database.
  • Regulate rates and prices of touristic services, previously registered in the terms established by law and regulations, and participate with the Ministry of Finance in setting prices and tariffs for tourism goods and services by the federal government.
  • Regulate, guide and stimulate tourism protection measures and monitor their implementation, in coordination with the agencies of the federal government and state and municipal authorities.
